Did You Know #5 – You Can Replace Sanyo Units With New Panasonic Units

Did you know that you can replace existing Sanyo SPW units with new Panasonic units? Panasonic acquired Sanyo in 2009 and have kept and further developed the commercial split, VRF & GHP (SPW) ranges meaning that it is possible to replace outdoors and indoor units in most situations.

This means that you have a huge amount of flexibility with existing systems whether you want to replace a cassette for a duct unit, add an additional indoor to a VRF, or replace a gas fired VRF (GHP) outdoor unit that is past its useful life. Each Sanyo generation has different criteria depending on the generation so we have created simple guides that show the possibilities and the procedures when replacing. The generation or series can be identified from the last number in the model code as highlighted in the example below.

VRF Range

Series 6

This generation is the same as the Panasonic systems currently sold so can be replaced like for like. Although there is a new Panasonic system due imminently which will mean that this will change the situation. Download the guide for replacement model information.

Series 5

This series operates on R410a and outdoors units can replaced provided they are standalone i.e. not connected to any other outdoor unit. Indoors, controls and accessories all have the same wiring requirements as current equipment so can be easily replaced. Download the guides for full information.

Series 4

This series operates on R410a and outdoors units can replaced provided they are standalone i.e. not connected to any other outdoor unit. Indoors, controls and accessories all have the same wiring requirements as current equipment so can be easily replaced. Download the guides for full information.

Series 3 – R407c

Whilst it is recommended to use Panasonic’s renewal technology and replace all equipment, in situations where this is not feasible then it is possible to replace outdoor and indoor units with minor modifications. GHP

It is not only possible to replace an existing Sanyo GHP for a new Panasonic GHP but because the GHP uses the same indoor units as standard VRF it is also possible to replace GHP for Panasonic electric VRF. As highlighted below and in the guides it is important to thoroughly flush the pipework when replacing GHP for electric as the two systems operate using different oils, failure to do so will invalidate warranty.

*Pipework needs to be thoroughly flushed due to difference in oils used with electric and gas systems.

**Requires CZ-SLK2 and standard renewal procedures should be followed

Single Splits

Series 6 & Series 4 – R410a

The generation runs on R410a and has the same communications and control wiring so it is possible to change indoor and outdoor units without modifications. Download the guide for replacement model information and further procedural details.

Series 3 – R407c

The generation runs on R407c so it is recommended to utilise Panasonic’s built in renewal technology and replace the complete system. However in situations where this may not be feasible it is possible to replace units with conditions. Download the guide for full details.
