What is VRF Air Conditioning?

VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) air conditioning is a highly efficient, modular heating and cooling solution that allows multiple indoor units to be connected to a single outdoor condensing unit. It works by precisely regulating the amount of refrigerant sent to each indoor unit, adjusting in real-time to meet the cooling or heating demands of different zones within a building.

Unlike conventional split systems, VRF systems operate with inverter-driven compressors and variable refrigerant control, offering significant energy savings, better zoning flexibility, and quieter operation. Depending on the setup, some systems can even deliver simultaneous heating and cooling to different areas of a building.

Up to 64 indoor units can be connected to a single system, making them perfect for large commercial projects.

What's the difference between VRF and VRV systems?

There’s no technical difference — VRV is Daikin’s patented name for their VRF systems. Other manufacturers like Fujitsu and Panasonic refer to their systems as VRF, but the technology is the same.

Can VRF systems provide both heating and cooling at the same time?

Yes, heat recovery VRF systems can heat and cool different zones simultaneously. This is ideal for buildings with varied room usage or orientation.

Are VRF/VRV systems suitable for refurbishment projects?

Absolutely. Many VRF systems are designed with flexible piping and modular components, making them ideal for retrofitting into existing buildings with minimal disruption.

How can I get help designing a VRF system?

Our experienced technical team at Oceanair can assist with system design, product selection, and specification support for Daikin, Panasonic, and Fujitsu VRF projects. Contact us to get started.

Where are VRF systems typically installed?

They’re widely used in: Office buildings, hotels, apartment complexes, hospitals and clinics, educational facilities and retail outlets.
